Published on November 7, 2019, a violent robbery at Kabare village in Kirinyaga County left two suspected gangsters dead and a third injured.

One of the slain gangsters was identified as a police officer who had turned to a life of crime.

A police officer, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that one of the suspects was a security officer from a special crime unit.

The gangsters had raided the village, targeting a women's group that was collecting Sh13,800 for table banking.

When the women raised an alarm, the villagers confronted the gangsters, prompting them to fire several shots and escape on a motorcycle towards Kutus town.

However, officers from the special crime unit gave chase and caught up with the gangsters at Njegas area, leading to a shootout that killed two of them on the spot.

"The women were contributing money for table banking when the robbers appeared and took away the cash," said one of the villagers.

Kirinyaga County police commander Leah Kithei confirmed that her officers responded promptly to the robbery and pursued the suspects.

She added that the bodies of the slain gangsters were taken to Kerugoya Hospital mortuary.

Ms. Kithei described the suspects as part of a gang that had been terrorizing innocent residents and traders in the region.
