Five Cancers You Don't Know Are Common in Women ¶
Published on November 7, 2019
Cancer affects people of all ages, and women are no exception. While there is no guaranteed way to prevent cancer, understanding the risks and taking preventative measures can help detect it early.
Types of Cancer Common in Women ¶
- Endometrial Cancer: This type of cancer affects the lining of the uterus and is more common in older women. Symptoms include pain during intercourse, vaginal bleeding, and pelvic pain.
- Lung Cancer: Smoking is the main culprit behind lung cancer in women, and inhaling cigarette smoke from smokers also increases the risk. Other causes include inhaling radon, a radioactive gas found in homes.
- Skin Cancer: Exposure to harmful sun rays and tanning beds increases the risk of skin cancer in women. The more one is exposed to tanning beds, the higher the chance of getting skin cancer.
- Cervical Cancer: This type of cancer occurs when a woman develops high-risk HPV viruses through direct sexual contact with an infected partner. Women are encouraged to be in monogamous relationships and use condoms to reduce the risk of infection.
- Colorectal Cancer: This type of cancer affects the colon and rectum and can be caused by lifestyle or genetic factors. Screening is necessary, especially if there is a family history of colorectal cancer.
