Residents of Soweto in Kibra, Nairobi, are facing eviction as the government plans to upgrade the slum. The project, which targets 4,335 affordable housing units, aims to replace the current shanties with high-rise buildings.
According to Charles Shikuku, Director of Slum Upgrading programme at the Ministry of Housing, the residents have until November 30, 2019, to vacate their houses to pave way for the beginning of the second phase of the upgrading.
Mr. Shikuku explained that the residents are required to open a bank account where the government will deposit Sh58,000 as a facilitation fee. The fee includes Sh4,000 per month for 12 months towards rent payment and Sh10,000 for relocation.
The slum upgrade has been divided into three phases, with the first completed in 2016. The project aims to provide affordable housing units to the residents of Soweto in Kibra.
