On November 4, 2019, Ethic, a popular Kenyan music group, released a song called 'Tarimbo' that sparked controversy over its lyrical content. The song's lyrics were criticized by Ezekiel Mutua, the CEO of the Kenya Film Classification Board, who claimed they advocated for the rape of women.
Five days after the song's release, Ethic issued a public apology, stating that they did not intend to objectify women in their songs. However, they did not indicate that they would be pulling down the song, which was still trending at number 1 on YouTube with over 790,000 views.
Responding to Ethic's apology, Ezekiel Mutua said that the group should take responsibility for their actions and change their behavior. He emphasized that an apology is not enough and that people must take responsibility for their actions.
'It's not enough to apologize. People must take responsibility for their actions. The real apology should be change of behavior and a commitment to be responsible!' Mutua said in a statement.
