On November 7, 2019, Kenya and Uganda reached an agreement to share the disputed Migingo island, a move that comes as the Kenyan government continues to assert its claim to the land.
Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Monica Juma announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Ugandan authorities, which aims to facilitate access to the island for fishermen and other Lake Victoria users.
According to CS Juma, the next step is to establish modalities for access management and the sharing of resources.
“Kenyans should know that these boundaries are shared by communities across the countries, and we have to find a way to make them soft,” said CS Juma.
She emphasized that the Kenyan government remains committed to protecting the country's territorial integrity, stating, “Kenyans must know the territorial integrity of the country will never be negotiated away.”
