November 7, 2019 - Napoli's players have been at the center of controversy after they allegedly defied orders and abandoned a week-long training retreat.
The Serie A club has announced that it will 'protect its economic, financial, image and disciplinary rights in all competent offices' following the incident.
According to local media, the players went home following Tuesday's Champions League match at home to Salzburg instead of to the hotel at Castel Volturno, north of Naples, where club management had ordered them to spend the week.
The decision to abandon the retreat comes after Napoli's poor performance in their last few matches, including a 2-1 defeat by AS Roma which left them seventh in Serie A.
The club's president, Aurelio De Laurentiis, had ordered the 'ritiro' - a week-long training retreat - to help the team bond and improve their performance.
However, the players' decision to abandon the retreat has sparked controversy, with some critics labeling it as a 'mutiny'.
The club has imposed a 'media silence' and has not specified whether the players will face fines or legal action.
