On November 6, 2019, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) approved a petition seeking to suspend the Taita Taveta County Government led by Governor Granton Samboja.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that the petition had met the required threshold of support from at least 10 percent of the registered voters in the county.
According to IEBC, the petition was supported by 21,861 registered voters of Taita Taveta County, exceeding the 15,500 signatures required by law.
The report will now be forwarded to President Uhuru Kenyatta, who will submit a report on grounds to suspend the county to the apex intergovernmental body within 14 days.
Upon approval from the apex body, the President will appoint a commission to inquire into the matter and submit a report to the President, who will then initiate a motion of suspension of the county government.
However, the approval of the petition by IEBC comes on a day when Governor Samboja and the Members of County Assembly, who had recently impeached him, called a truce after a four-month rift.
