On Tuesday, November 5, 2019, a woman being pursued by the police for her involvement in chang'aa brewing created a scene at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital in Nairobi.
The woman, a known chang'aa brewer from Kayole, had visited the hospital to check on three of her customers who had been injured during a confrontation with police on Saturday.
According to eyewitnesses, the woman noticed that she was being followed by police and, in a desperate attempt to evade arrest, removed all her clothes, including her underwear, and began screaming, claiming she was being unfairly targeted.
She then entered the hospital and hid there as the officers who were trailing her waited outside, hoping she would come out.
One of the women she had joined at the hospital later handed her a shawl, but the police eventually apprehended her and took her to the Soweto police post, where she is being detained.
The incident occurred just days after a police raid on her chang'aa den in Soweto, which sparked protests and led to the shooting of three people.
The three individuals who were shot are alleged to have pelted police officers with stones during the crackdown in the area and will be arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts on Wednesday, November 6.
