On November 6, 2019, Hannah Inyama, a University of Nairobi lecturer, was released from custody after a court established that she is not fit to stand trial.
The decision came after a psychiatric evaluation presented to Makadara Chief Magistrate Heston Nyaga revealed that Ms Inyama is not sound of mind.
Ms Inyama had been arrested after police found the decomposing body of her 13-year-old son wrapped in a blanket in their house in Nairobi's South B estate.
Initial reports suggested that Ms Inyama may have been a member of a cult, but she told investigators that her son fell and died in the house because she does not believe in hospitals.
However, an autopsy conducted on the teenager revealed that he had died due to excessive bleeding in his stomach, caused by severe ulcers.
The boy may have been dead for about 10 days when police discovered the body, which was found after a caretaker at the lecturer's apartment building alerted police due to a foul smell emanating from the house.
