At least 16 candidates failed to show up at an examination centre in Kisii County where they were to sit for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) papers, a day after 11 others were arrested for impersonation.

The incident occurred at the Inter-City Academy, Milimani Ramasha Centre, in Bomachoge Chache Constituency, where 103 registered candidates from various schools were expected to take their exams.

On Tuesday, 11 people who posed as candidates, including unemployed trained teachers, were arrested, along with the centre's proprietor, Charles Osoro.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha described the case as an 'advanced type' of cheating, with Kisii County being a hotspot for cheating attempts.

Prof Magoha stated that the centre had manipulated the Kenya National Examinations Council's (Knec) schedule, using photographs to verify the identities of the candidates.

He added that the centre had also brought in their own pictures and people, which raised suspicions.

Prof Magoha was in Migori to supervise the examinations and hinted that the Inter-City Academy centre could be shut down.
