On November 6, 2019, a group of leaders from North-Eastern Kenya expressed their discontent with the recently released 2019 national population census results.
Led by National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale, the leaders claimed that the numbers were not accurate and may have a significant impact on the region during the delimitation process and resource allocation.
During a press conference at the Parliament Buildings, Duale demanded that the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) open their servers to establish the true results of the August 2019 Population Census, threatening to contest the results in court.
He further alleged that some individuals in government were behind attempts to create a scenario where resources allocated to counties are reduced due to low numbers of residents as reflected in the census.
Wajir Governor Mohamud Abdi echoed similar sentiments, stating that the funds spent on the census were wasted and calling for an audit of the entire exercise.
Garissa Governor Ali Korane expressed concerns that his county risks losing Mbalambala constituency if the current results are upheld.
MPs from Elgeyo Marakwet county also dismissed the recent census results, claiming that most of their people were not counted.
