On November 6, 2019, a Malaysian court handed down a 34-month jail sentence to K. Ganesh for killing a pregnant cat by putting it in a laundrette dryer outside Kuala Lumpur.

The incident, which sparked widespread outrage in Malaysia, occurred in September 2018 when two men, including Ganesh, stuffed the cat into a dryer at a self-service laundry and set it running.

According to official news agency Bernama, Ganesh was found guilty of breaking animal protection laws and was also fined 40,000 ringgit (approximately Sh970,000).

Malaysians reacted with fury when CCTV footage of the incident went viral, showing the cat being stuffed into the dryer late at night.

As part of his sentence, Ganesh will remain free on bail for now as he plans to appeal the conviction.
