On November 6, 2019, Arsenal Football Club made a significant change in leadership, appointing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as its new captain.

The decision was announced by under-fire coach Unai Emery, who cited the need for the team to move forward and focus on upcoming matches against Vitoria and Leicester.

Aubameyang, a 30-year-old Gabonese footballer, takes over the captaincy from Granit Xhaka, who was demoted after a heated exchange with fans during a match against Crystal Palace.

According to Emery, Aubameyang was one of four players selected as potential captains, and he emerged as the top scorer in the English Premier League last season alongside Liverpool's Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.

Emery explained that Xhaka was voted captain by his teammates at the start of the season but lost the position due to his behavior, which included storming off the pitch and using profanity towards fans.

Emery stated that Xhaka accepted his decision and that the matter was closed.
