On November 6, 2019, Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko sparked outrage after he physically assaulted award-winning photographer Collins Kweyu at the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission offices.
According to eyewitnesses, Sonko slapped Kweyu on the head as he made his way to the EACC gate, where he had been summoned.
Collins Kweyu, who was on official duty, was also assaulted by several other people, including a man believed to be Sonko's security detail.
As the incident unfolded, police were seen teargassing Sonko's supporters who had accompanied him to the EACC offices.
Many have condemned the assault on the photographer, with journalists taking to social media to call for respect for journalists.
The Media Council of Kenya has also condemned Sonko's actions and called upon the DCI and DPP to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attacks on Kweyu and other journalists.
