Google Play Points, a rewards program initially launched in Japan and Korea, is expanding to the US. The program allows users to earn points for their purchases and downloads on the Play Store, with the option to redeem these points for various rewards.

Available on the Play Store since 2019, Google Play Points is a strictly optional service that users can sign up for by heading over to the ‘Play Points’ section in the app’s hamburger menu.

Users earn points for all in-app purchases, subscriptions, movies, television shows, books, audiobooks, and music purchases. Downloading some free apps will also net users additional Play Points.

Google Play Points has several tiers, including Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum, each offering different earning rates and rewards. For example, users on the Bronze tier earn 1 point for every $1 spent, while those on the Platinum tier earn 1.4 points for every $1.

Users can redeem their points for special in-app items, Google Play Credit, or rent a movie or buy an audiobook. They can also use their points to help charities of their choice from a rotating list of nonprofits.

Google Play Points will be available to all users in the US starting next week, with the program currently available only in Japan, South Korea, and the US.
