On November 6, 2019, Malaysia's justice system handed down a prison term to K. Ganesh, a 42-year-old man found guilty of breaking animal protection laws in a shocking case of animal cruelty.

The incident occurred in September 2022 at a self-service laundry outside Kuala Lumpur, where CCTV footage captured the disturbing act of a cat being stuffed into a dryer and then set in motion by two men.

Malaysians were outraged when the footage went viral, and the police were eventually notified after a female customer discovered the cat's carcass.

Judge Rasyihah Ghazali sentenced Ganesh to prison, stating, "I hope this sentence will serve as a lesson to the accused and the public to not be cruel to animals."

He was also fined 40,000 ringgit ($9,700), and will remain free on bail as he plans to appeal the decision.
