Kenyans Slam TSC Boss Nancy Macharia Over KNUT Row ¶
November 6, 2019, marked a day of intense backlash against Teachers Service Commission (TSC) CEO Nancy Macharia on Twitter, as Kenyans expressed outrage over the commission's decision to terminate its recognition agreement with the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT).
The move, which was announced in a letter to the National Labour Board, cited a decline in KNUT's membership below the required threshold of 51 years. The letter, dated November 4, 2019, stated that 'The Kenya National Union of Teachers does not have the simple majority of unionised employees under the employment of the Teachers Service Commission as at November 4, 2019.'
KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion was also de-registered from the teaching fraternity by TSC boss Nancy Macharia, a move that has been met with widespread criticism. The de-registration was gazetted, meaning that Sossion will no longer be recognized as a teacher or teach in any school.
Twitter users have taken to the platform to express their outrage and disappointment with Nancy Macharia's actions. 'Always remember, you are a public servant with no security of tenure. Your retirement or arrest whichever comes first is always around the corner. Don't let power get into your head. Don't abuse power,' tweeted Donald B Kipkorir (@DonaldBKipkorir) on November 5, 2019.
Other Twitter users have also weighed in on the issue, with some calling for Nancy Macharia's resignation and others expressing support for KNUT and its Secretary General Wilson Sossion.
As the row between TSC and KNUT continues to escalate, one thing is clear: the people of Kenya will not stand idly by while their rights are being trampled on.
