On November 6, 2019, the Kenyan government took a significant step to empower dairy farmers in Laikipia by issuing milk coolers, motorbikes, and milk cans worth 8 million shillings to Ngenia Muungano Dairy farmers Coop Society.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri handed over the equipment to the farmers, stating that the move would help eradicate poverty by providing storage and transport facilities.

The milk coolers have a capacity to hold 3,000 litres of milk before it is collected by buyers, and the motorbikes will create employment opportunities for the youth who will be collecting the produce from those who cannot make it to the collection centres.

CS Kiunjuri also encouraged farmers to join cooperative societies to pool their produce and negotiate for better prices, citing the poor milk prices as a major concern.

The Ministry of Agriculture aims to ensure that farmers at the grassroots level are empowered and that dairy products are of high quality before reaching the market.
