On March 4, 1997, Ramadhan Kweyu Amulabu passed away, leaving behind a 21-acre piece of land. His widow, Rukia Ashioya Kweyu, instituted succession proceedings in 2002, and was granted letters of administration on September 12, 2002.
However, her administration powers were short-lived, as Besi Hamusida Senagi Kweyu moved to court, claiming she was the elder widow. The grant was revoked, and a fresh one issued to Rukia and Besi as joint administrators of the estate.
But Besi's death on November 14, 2012, before the grant was confirmed, led to a new development. Justice William Musyoka has since appointed Jane Njeri Njenga and Rukia's daughter, Lydia Namusia, as administrators, giving the parties 28 days to lodge an appeal if dissatisfied with the orders.
Justice Musyoka's decision was based on Rukia's attempts to conceal the existence of her elder co-wife and sub-divide the land in Kakamega while the matter was still pending in court, demonstrating her inability to administer the estate.
