On November 9, 2019, Rob Shaver, the coach of Plainedge High School, will miss his team's final regular season game due to a suspension.
Shaver's team recently defeated South Side 61-13, a score that has raised eyebrows in the local community.
According to a BBC report, the score was a result of a policy enacted three years ago in Nassau County, which requires coaches to explain their winning margin if their team exceeds 42 points.
Shaver has been found guilty of violating this policy, and as a result, he will be suspended for one game.
In an interview with Newsday, Shaver refuted claims that he 'ran up the score' on purpose, stating, "The spirit of the rule is to prevent better teams from running up on lesser programs and sportsmanship and dignity and all that stuff. I get it. That didn't happen."
Phil Onesto, whose team lost to Shaver's, has stated that he had 'no issue with how the game went' on October 25.
