At least five people died in a road accident on Monday evening along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, sparking concerns over the increasing number of road fatalities in the country.
The accident occurred near the Malewa River after a personal car carrying the five individuals rammed head-on into a trailer.
The trailer lost control and hit another oncoming truck before rolling by the roadside, causing temporary disruptions to traffic along the busy road.
According to eyewitness Stephen Mungai, the driver of the personal car was at fault for the accident, as he carelessly overtook several cars, leading to the head-on collision with the trailer.
Several drivers and passengers of the trailers and truck were seriously injured and rushed to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
Naivasha Deputy OCPD John Kwasa confirmed the incident, stating that the bodies had been retrieved and taken to the area mortuary.
"We had an unfortunate accident in the afternoon where we lost five people following an accident that involved three cars along the highway," he said.
Just hours before, a principal from Reverend Jeremiah Gitau in Naivasha died in a separate accident while her two colleagues were fighting for their lives after their car rammed into a stalled trailer near Longonot town along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road.
The incident threw education plans into disarray, as officials scrambled to send new centre managers to affected schools to distribute KCSE examination papers.
