Kenya: KCSE 2019 Examinations Begin Amid Tight Security

The 2019 Form Four national exams in Kenya began on Monday, November 4, with 699,745 candidates writing the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) tests.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha warned parents in Nyanza region who were planning to buy KCSE examinations, stating that he was aware of some parents in Homa Bay, Migori, and Kisii counties who had made contributions of Sh200,000 to buy exams.

Tragedy marred day one of KCSE in Nakuru County when a centre manager died in a road accident on her way to collect examination materials. Two other centre managers suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Kijabe Mission Hospital.

Naivasha Deputy County Commissioner Mbogo Mathioya stated that arrangements were made to have the exam materials dispatched to the affected schools.

Basic Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said a team had been sent to Tana River County to assess impassable roads, and a chopper was on standby in case of any eventuality.

Lamu County Director of Education Joshua Kaaga asked teachers to keep off examination centres, stating that only contracted teachers working with Knec were allowed to handle examination materials.
