On November 4, 2019, Turkish officials announced the capture of the sister of former Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in a raid near the town of Azaz in northern Syria.

The 65-year-old woman, identified as Rasmiya Awad, was detained in a trailer where she was living with her family, according to Turkish officials.

Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State group, was killed in a US raid on his compound in north-west Syria on October 27, 2019.

Experts say the capture of Baghdadi's sister could provide valuable intelligence about the inner workings of the Islamic State group.

Mike Pregent, a counter-terrorism expert at the Hudson Institute, told the BBC that the sister may have knowledge of smuggling routes and networks that Baghdadi trusted.

However, it is unclear how much useful intelligence the sister could provide, or how much time she spent with Baghdadi.
