At just 21 years old in 1995, Julie Gichuru's life was turned upside down when her parents divorced. The former Citizen TV news anchor was in college at the time, studying law at the University of Cardiff.

Her father remarried, and her mother emigrated, leaving Julie without a home to return to. To make matters worse, she didn't have enough money to complete her degree.

Julie has spoken publicly about her struggles, saying, "I was in the throes of deep depression. My parents divorced, Dad remarried and Mum emigrated. I had no home to go back to. I didn’t have enough money to complete my degree. I was frightened and anxious."

Despite her anger with God, Julie found solace in her faith and trusted that He would see her through the difficult time. She took on two jobs to support herself and studied hard, determined to complete her degree.

Julie's story is a testament to her strength and resilience. As she reflected on her journey, she said, "I didn’t know where I would end up but I knew knowledge would get me there. As long as I had breath in my body, I was going to get there."
