On November 4, 2019, President Uhuru Kenyatta received the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census results from Cabinet Secretary Ukur Yattani at State House in Nairobi. The Economic Freedom Party (EFP) has since threatened to take legal action against the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) over the census results.
EFP Chairman Hassan Abey expressed concerns that the figures do not accurately reflect the population of Mandera. He called for an investigation into the matter and a corrective measure to ensure the county is represented fairly in Kenya's demographics.
Abey pointed out that the population of Mandera has dropped significantly from 1.02 million in the 2009 census to 867,457 in the 2019 census. He described this decline as 'unbelievable' and questioned the accuracy of the figures.
The EFP Chairman alleged that there was a deliberate effort to disenfranchise the locals of Mandera for political and economic reasons. He asked why some individuals would seek to undermine the population of Mandera during each census.
