Seven Peanut Butter Brands Suspended Over Aflatoxin Contamination

On November 4, 2019, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) took action against seven peanut butter products and their parent companies due to high levels of aflatoxin contamination.

The affected products include Nuteez peanut butter, True nuts, Fressy, Supa meal, Sue's Naturals, Zesta, and Nutty.

KEBS suspended the products and their parent companies' permits after conducting tests that revealed aflatoxin levels exceeding the allowed limit.

The statutory body directed the companies to discontinue production, recall the affected products from the market, and take corrective measures to adhere to set standards.

KEBS also announced plans to work with government institutions in the peanut butter value chain to address the issue of aflatoxin in unprocessed groundnuts.

This is not the first time Nuteez peanut butter has been suspended by KEBS, as it was previously suspended in January 2019 and later cleared in April 2019 after the manufacturer addressed concerns related to raw material control, production process, and final product testing.
