On November 4, 2019, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) suspended seven peanut butter brands from the market due to high levels of aflatoxin.

The affected brands include True Nuts (Truenutz Kenya), Fressy (Fressy Food Company Limited), Supa Meal (Supacosm Products Limited), Nuteez (Jetlak Foods Limited), Sue’s Naturals (Nature’s Way Health), Zesta (Trufoods Limited), and Nutty by nature (Target Distributors).

Kebs has instructed the manufacturing companies to discontinue supplying the products and recall all existing stock from the market immediately.

The recall follows test results by Kebs confirming high levels of aflatoxin in the products.

According to Kebs, the Kenyan standard for aflatoxin is 15 parts per billion (ppb), with a maximum value for Aflatoxin B1 of 5 ppb.

Kebs has also suspended the work permits allowing the companies to use the Standardization Mark.

Kebs has asked the manufacturers to implement corrective actions to ensure their products comply with quality specifications.
