Kenya's population has grown significantly since the last census, with a total population of 47,564,296, according to the provisional report released by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on November 4, 2019.

The report indicates a population growth of nine million since the exercise was last carried out 10 years ago.

The census was conducted from August 24 to 31, with a mop-up exercise following from September 1-2 to cover those who were not counted the first time.

The results show that Nairobi has the largest population, with 4,397,073 residents, followed by Kiambu with 2,417,735 residents, and Nakuru with 2,162,202 residents.

Other counties with significant populations include Kakamega, Bungoma, Meru, Kilifi, Machakos, Kisii, and Mombasa.

According to the report, the average household size in Nairobi is 2.9 people, while in Kiambu it is 3.0 people, and in Kirinyaga it is also 3.0 people.

The distribution of population by land area and population density by county per square kilometer also reveals interesting trends, with Marsabit having the lowest population density at 6 people per square kilometer, and Lamu having the highest at 23 people per square kilometer.
