Kenya's Population Grows to 47.6 Million

Kenya's population has grown significantly since 2009, with the latest census results showing a total of 47,564,296 people, up from 38.6 million in 2009.

According to the 2019 census results, women account for 50.5% of the population, while the average household size has declined to 3.9 in 2019 from 4.2 in 2009.

The most populous counties in Kenya are Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Bungoma, while the least populous counties are Lamu, Isiolo, Samburu, Tana River, and Taita Taveta.

Here are some key highlights from the census results:

  • Most populous counties: Nairobi (4,397,073), Kiambu (2,417,735), Nakuru (2,162,202), Kakamega (1,867,579), and Bungoma (1,670,570)
  • Least populous counties: Lamu (143,920), Isiolo (268,002), Samburu (310,327), Tana River (315,943), and Taita Taveta (340,671)
  • County with most number of intersex people: Nairobi (245), Kiambu (135), and Nakuru (95)
  • County with least number of intersex people: Samburu (7), Tharaka Nithi (7), and Isiolo (9)
  • Counties with highest average household size: Mandera (6.9), Wajir (6.1), Garissa (5.9), West Pokot (5.6), and Kwale (5.0)
  • Counties with lowest average household size: Nairobi (2.9), Nyeri (3.0), Kirinyaga (3.0), Mombasa (3.1)
  • Counties with highest number of people per Sq. Km: Nairobi (6,247), Mombasa (5,495), Vihiga (1,047), Kiambu (952), and Kisii (958)
  • Counties with lowest number of people per Sq. Km: Tana River (8), Marsabit (6), Isiolo (11), Samburu (15), and Wajir (14)
  • Counties with highest number of women: Kiambu (1,230,454), Nakuru (1,084,835), Nairobi (2,204,376), Meru (777,975), and Machakos (711,191)

According to Mr. Mwangi, the average household size has declined to 3.9 in 2019 from 4.2 in 2009.
