On November 4, 2019, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) released the 2019 population census results, showing a total population of 47,564,296.
According to the census, men account for 23,548,056 of the population, while women make up 24,014,716, a difference of 466,660.
Director General of the KNBS, Zachary Mwangi, noted that the female population accounts for 50.5% of the total population, with the intersex population declining to 1,524, a 2.2% decrease from 2009.
The average household size has also declined over the last 10 years, from 4.2 in 2009 to 3.9 in 2019, as reported by Mr. Mwangi.
The most populous counties in Kenya are Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kakamega, and Bungoma, while the least populous are Lamu, Isiolo, Samburu, Tana River, and Taita Taveta.
President Uhuru Kenyatta emphasized the importance of the census results in guiding government planning, stating, 'The numbers released today will go a long way in guiding successive planning for the benefit of all Kenyans.'
