On November 3, 2019, a Premier League match between Tottenham and Everton ended in a 1-1 draw, but the incident that unfolded in the process has left the football community in shock.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino expressed his sorrow for Gomes, who suffered a fracture dislocation to his right ankle, but also hinted at a possible appeal against Son Heung-min's red card.

According to Pochettino, the red card was a result of VAR's decision, which upgraded the initial yellow card to a red one. He stated, "It is unbelievable to see a red card. In that situation we need to help because the decision of the referee was a yellow card but the VAR changed the decision."

He also expressed his gratitude towards the Everton players, particularly captain Seamus Coleman, who suffered a similar injury in March 2017, for their sportsmanship and kindness towards Son.

Everton's Cenk Tosun also shared his account of the incident, stating that Gomes was in shock and couldn't understand what he was saying. Tosun added, "Everybody is sad inside. Some players, they nearly cried."

As for Gomes, he has received plenty of messages of support from his former teammates and players in the Portugal national team.
