On November 4, 2019, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) took a significant step to ensure consumer safety by suspending the permits of seven peanut butter companies.

The affected companies include True Nuts, Fressy, Supa Meal, Nuteez, Sue's, Zesta, and Nutty, which have been instructed to discontinue and recall all substandard products.

KEBS has also ordered the companies to institute corrective actions to prevent future contamination.

According to KEBS, the suspension will be lifted once the correction is confirmed.

The move comes after tests revealed that the peanut butter products contained high levels of aflatoxin, exceeding the maximum limit allowed by the Kenya Standard, 'KS EAS 60: 2013, Peanut Butter – Specification.'

The standard specifies that the maximum total aflatoxin content is 15 parts per billion (ppb) and gives a maximum value for Aflatoxin B1 of 5 ppb.
