On November 4, 2019, a group of journalists in Kampala took to the streets to protest against police brutality, only to be met with arrest by the authorities.

Among those detained was Bashir Kazibwe, a prominent figure in the Uganda Association of Journalists Association (UJA).

The journalists were marching to the police headquarters to petition the leadership to stop their officers from brutalising media practitioners during riots and demonstrations.

Just days prior, two Nation Media Group journalists were hospitalised after being assaulted by police officers while covering a protest at Makerere University.

However, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango shifted the blame onto the journalists, claiming they had gotten caught up in the fracas.
