On November 1, 2019, US Ambassador to Kenya Kyle McCarter took to Twitter to express his disappointment with The Star newspaper's article titled 'Chinese eye Mombasa-Nairobi Expressway as US Ditch Project.'

The article claimed that the US had abandoned the project due to concerns over inflated costs. However, Ambassador McCarter vehemently denied these claims, terming the article as 'total rubbish.'

He stated, 'There is so much wrong with this article I don’t know where to start to respond. Total RUBBISH! Journalistic malpractice. Start w/ picture of the right highway! Actual FACTS to follow.'

Responding to a Kenyan Twitter user who expressed opposition to the project, Ambassador McCarter emphasized the importance of infrastructure development, stating, 'Nonsense. Infrastructure is needed but at affordable prices, great quality, debt that can be paid back, transparent contracts, Kenyan labor, and no thievery.'

He reiterated the US commitment to the project, stating, 'The United States remains fully committed to the Nairobi-Mombasa Expressway project and to fulfilling President Trump and President Kenyatta’s shared pledge to make this critically needed road a reality.'
