On November 3, 2019, Kenyan athlete Joyciline Jepkosgei made history by winning the 2019 New York marathon, beating her compatriot Mary Keitany in a stunning upset.
At just 25 years old, Jepkosgei was competing in the marathon for the first time after switching from the half-marathon distance.
Keitany, a four-time New York City marathon champion, was considered a strong favorite to win, but Jepkosgei had other plans.
With a blistering pace, Jepkosgei took the lead early in the race and never looked back, crossing the finish line in a record-breaking time of 2:22:38.
Keitany finished second with a time of 2:23:32, while Ethiopian Ruti Aga took third place with a time of 2:25:51.
Despite Keitany's impressive performance, Jepkosgei's victory was a major upset, and she was rewarded with a $10 million prize and a $4.5 million bonus for finishing second.
