Trained by Todd Pletcher, Vino Rosso (ridden by Irad Ortiz Junior) pulled off a stunning upset, leaving McKinzie in its wake to claim the $6 million Breeders' Cup Classic.
However, the victory was marred by tragedy as Mongolian Groom, ridden by Abel Cedillo, was pulled up near the eighth pole with a serious left hind limb fracture. Despite the best efforts of the veterinary team, the horse's condition was deemed irreversible, and euthanasia was necessary.
