Leaders from Mt Kenya region have expressed their stand on the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report, insisting that it must address critical issues of representation and resource distribution.
Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri, Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, MPs Patrick Mariru (Laikipia West) and Kwenya Thuku (Kinangop) said the report must meet the region's irreducible minimums if it is to gain their support.
The leaders claimed that the current system has led to inequality in representation and resource allocation, with some regions being under-represented and receiving less resources.
“We are not saying that we are opposing the document since it has not yet been brought to us. But as leaders from the region, we have to give our people directions. Our issues have to be addressed and taken into considerations in the document,” said Kiunjuri.
Senator Kinyua regretted that the region had been neglected for a long time and urged the BBI report to address their concerns.
Laikipia West MP Patrick Mariru expressed opposition to the parliamentary system, advocating for a one-man, one-vote system for equal representation.
