Published on November 3, 2019, a disturbing story emerged about a sex worker who contracted HIV and allegedly infected a Nairobi police officer.
According to the survivor, she was arrested by the officer in March 2019, after being dropped off near her residence. The officer, who was also a customer, had taken her phone and was demanding extra payment. The survivor was taken to a police station, where she was held overnight and subjected to a headcount supervised by the OCS.
During her detention, the survivor alleges that the OCS offered her sex in exchange for her freedom, and she reluctantly agreed. The survivor claims that the OCS used a condom, but she was still infected with HIV.
Months later, the OCS contacted the survivor, threatening to track her down. He allegedly told her that he had given her the virus and that she had not used a condom. The survivor's story highlights the risks and exploitation faced by sex workers in Kenya, who often have to resort to desperate measures to survive.
