More than 300 families in Tsunza village, Kwale County, are calling for the construction of Dongo Kundu bypass phase two and three to be put on hold until they are fully compensated by the government.

Launched by President Uhuru Kenyatta last month at a cost of Ksh.25 billion, the 14-kilometre bypass is meant to decongest commuters at Likoni channel and boost tourism in the south coast.

However, the villagers, led by Kinango Member of Parliament Benjamin Tayari, are not against the project but want the government to prioritize their compensation before proceeding with the construction.

“From the beginning we told the government we are in support of the project because we are aware of the benefits of the road but our main concern is compensation,” said Tayari.

According to Tayari, the government has already started the construction of the road without compensating the locals affected by the project, which has left the villagers dissatisfied.
