Kenyan marathoners Eliud Kipchoge and Brigid Kosgei have made history by winning the prestigious Abbott World Marathon Majors Series XII award.
On November 3, 2019, Kipchoge and Kosgei were conferred with the award after garnering 50 points each in their respective categories.
According to the award's criteria, Kipchoge beat off competition from Ethiopian athletes Lelisa Desisa and Birhanu Legese to win the award in the men's category.
Desisa and Legese amassed 41 points each, but the former ranked second based on a vote by the events' race directors.
In the women's category, Kosgei stunned Ethiopia's Ruti Aga and compatriot Vivian Cheruiyot to claim the gong, accumulating 50 points.
Both Kipchoge and Kosgei have enjoyed a terrific campaign, with both winning the Virgin Money London Marathon last April.
As a result of their win, Kipchoge and Kosgei will pocket an eye-watering KSh 25 million each as prize money for the honours.
Before then, Kipchoge won the BMW Berlin Marathon in September 2018, clocking an impressive 2:01:39 in his still-standing world record.
He would later follow up with a 2:02:37 course record at the London Marathon.
On her part, Kosgei won the 2018 Bank of America Chicago Marathon last October in 2:18:35 before winning the title again in London in her first series title.
