Published on November 3, 2019, the US is on the cusp of a highly contentious election year, with President Donald Trump facing an impeachment inquiry in the House of Representatives.

The inquiry, which centres on Trump's dealings with Ukraine, has sparked a fierce backlash from the President, who has labelled the investigation a 'hoax' and accused Democratic leaders of being 'mentally violent.'

Despite the turmoil, the Democratic Party is struggling to find a clear frontrunner, with Senator Elizabeth Warren currently leading the polls, followed closely by Senator Bernie Sanders and Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

However, many Democrats fear that Warren and Sanders are too liberal to win in a nationwide vote, while Buttigieg may not be electable beyond his core base of white, liberal voters.

As the impeachment inquiry continues, analysts predict that the Republican-dominated Senate will spare Trump from removal, even if he loses the vote in the House.

With the election just over a year away, candidates are already vying for attention, but the impeachment inquiry is dominating the news and threatening to overshadow the Democratic Party's key issues, including healthcare, gun control, and immigration reform.
