On November 1, 2019, three Jubilee MPs from the Mt. Kenya region publicly endorsed Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri as President Uhuru Kenyatta's preferred successor in 2022, leaving Deputy President William Ruto out of the running.

The MPs, Kabinga Wathayu (Mwea), Munene Wambugu (Kirinyaga Central), and Zachary Thuku (Kinangop), claimed that Kiunjuri was a seasoned leader with the experience needed to take over from President Kenyatta.

According to the MPs, Kiunjuri was the vibrant person the region needed to fight for their people's rights and ensure they received a rightful share of the national cake.

Speaking at Nyaikungu Primary School in Kirinyaga County, the MPs announced that they would lobby their colleagues from the region to back Kiunjuri for the presidential position.

CS Kiunjuri responded by calling on the leaders to work in unison to have a greater voice in demanding their share of resources from the government.
