Published on November 2, 2019, a report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) exposed the shocking reality of sex slavery in Somalia.
Kenyan women from the Coast region are the most targeted, with traffickers luring them with promises of jobs that turn out to be false.
"The women were deceived with false promises of a job but instead kept captive and exploited in marriage and sexual slavery," the report revealed.
According to the report, traffickers take advantage of the vulnerability and desperation of women and children by promising them greener pastures, only to force them into a life of slavery and violence.
Armed groups in the region, including Al Shabaab, have been implicated in the recruitment of children for use in combat or support roles, as well as the abduction and coercion of women into sexual slavery.
One such incident was reported in 2017, where a group of women was recruited from the Coast of Kenya and taken to a region controlled by Al Shabaab in Somalia.
