On Saturday, November 2, 2019, Siya Kolisi achieved the ultimate goal of his rags-to-riches journey, leading the Springboks to a World Cup victory over England.

As the first black man to captain the Springboks, Kolisi made history by becoming the first black player to raise the Webb Ellis Cup, securing a 32-12 win at Yokohama International Stadium.

Growing up in a poverty-stricken township, Kolisi's journey was far from easy. He did not have a television set when the Springboks won their second title in 2007, and his family struggled to make ends meet.

However, Kolisi's talent and determination eventually earned him a bursary to Grey High, a top boys school in Port Elizabeth, where he began to pursue his passion for rugby.

“Once I got my opportunity to play, I gave it my best shot,” Kolisi said, reflecting on his journey.

With the support of his coach, Rassie Erasmus, Kolisi worked hard to hone his skills and eventually became the captain of the Springboks.

Erasmus, who is now the Springboks coach, praised Kolisi's dedication and perseverance, saying, “He had days when he didn’t have food. He didn’t have shoes to wear. He couldn’t get to school. Here he is as the captain and he has led South Africa to win this Cup. I think that should sum up what Siya is.”
