United had missed similar successive half-chances from Andreas Pereira and Fred in the opening exchanges of the match.
However, King's goal proved to be the difference-maker as Bournemouth stood firm at the end of 90 minutes to gather all three points and move ahead of United on the Premier League table.
United showed more intent at the start of the second half, but Bournemouth's keeper Aaron Ramsdale was equal to the task, saving several shots from the Red Devils.
