Published on November 2, 2019, the ongoing campaigns in Kibra are being used by key politicians to form alliances and raid territories ahead of the 2022 elections.

ODM leader Raila Odinga has been courting allies across the political divide, with the latest additions being Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua and Makueni Governor Kivutha Kibwana.

“President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila have agreed to work together to spur the country forward and improve the economy. However, there are people inside his government who are letting him down by perpetuating corruption. As Kamba leaders, we have sat down and decided to walk with Imran and ODM,” Mutua said.

The Kamba community in Kibra is a crucial swing group, making up the third largest demographic after the Luo and Luhya.

By reaching out to Dr. Mutua, Mr. Odinga aims to neutralize his partners in the National Super Alliance, including Musyoka of the Orange Democratic Movement, Moses Wetang'ula of Ford Kenya, and Musalia Mudavadi of the Amani National Congress.

This alliance between Odinga and Mutua will not only influence the Kibra election but also shape politics in the Ukambani region.
