On November 2, 2019, Prof Yash Pal Ghai, the former chairman of the Kenya Constitutional Review Commission, expressed disappointment with President Uhuru Kenyatta's handling of devolution in Kenya.
Speaking in Mombasa, Prof Ghai stated that the President had failed to uphold the Constitution, particularly in regards to devolution, which had led to the country's current problems.
Prof Ghai, who was scheduled to address a meeting of the Okoa Mombasa coalition, was prevented from doing so by the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) management, citing security concerns.
According to Muslim for Human Rights (Muhuri) chairman Khelef Khalifa, the coalition had booked the university hall in advance and made the necessary payments, but were informed on Friday that the meeting could not proceed.
Mr. Khalifa stated that the university management had cited security issues, including the fear of riots, as the reason for cancelling the meeting.
Prof Ghai expressed his disappointment with the President's handling of devolution, stating that he had 'let us down' and that the country was experiencing problems due to the failure of leaders to carefully read the Constitution.
