Nairobi has taken the lead in environmental conservation among Kenya's 47 counties, with a remarkable Environmental Performance Index (EPI) of 75.5 percent, as revealed by a recent report from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) on November 2, 2019.

The report highlights Nairobi's strengths in various environmental sectors, including energy management, natural resources, access to safe drinking water, low air pollution, tree cover retention, and high literacy levels.

While acknowledging the county's progress, NEMA noted that there are areas that require further improvement, particularly in garbage management and sanitation systems.

"The county is on the right track but needs to invest in upgrading the sanitation system, water storage and management, and waste water management," the report stated.

Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko expressed optimism about the report, pledging to focus more on environmental conservation, water, and sanitation based on the recommendations.

"When we took over in 2017, we focused on garbage collection, beautification, and dumpsite rehabilitation. We want to double our efforts and prioritize sewer and solid waste management," he said.

The county has allocated Sh3 billion to the environmental sector, aiming to improve sanitation levels, sewerage, and garbage collection.
