On November 1, 2019, Raila Odinga, the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), faced off against his political rival, William Ruto, the Deputy President of Kenya, in Kibra, a key constituency in Nairobi.
According to Raila, Ruto was trying to deceive the residents of Kibra by promising them false hopes and making empty promises to McDonald Mariga, the Jubilee Party's candidate in the by-election.
"I want to start from tomorrow to ensure that the image of Kibra is locked down, and the old image of Kibra is seen," Raila said during a meeting with the Abagusii community.
He added, "Abagusii, are you ready?"
Raila's comments came after Ruto accused the ODM leader of failing to improve the lives of Kibra residents during his tenure as the area's representative.
"You are not aware of who will help you do this. Why can't you do it? Are you not a deputy president to serve the government?" Raila asked Ruto.
Ruto has been leading the campaign for Mariga, who is seen as a strong contender in the by-election. The election is set to take place on November 7, 2019, with ODM, Jubilee, and ANC expected to contest for the seat.
