Published on November 2, 2019, the Sh4 billion Lake Basin Mall in Kenya has been struggling to attract tenants since its completion in 2016. However, the project is now showing signs of revival, with 45% of the building occupied.
According to Odoyo Owidi, the chairperson of the Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA), the mall's office space on the second floor is fully occupied, and various activities are taking place within the mall.
Best Western International, a hotel chain with over 4,000 hotels in more than 100 countries, has opened a three-star hotel at the mall, marking a significant milestone in the project's revival.
The mall is expected to generate Sh230 million annually once all spaces are occupied, with the amount expected to increase in subsequent years.
The project has been plagued by controversy, including a multi-billion shillings scam that led to the former chairman of LBDA being charged in court over corruption.
